Rock N Roll Hotel Show Cancelled

To our friends in and around DC,

We regret to announce that the Rock N Roll Hotel show has been called off, as it would appear that the east coast is already in for a bit of a rocker. The storm’s timing is as bad as it could be, and safety is very important to us, so we’re erring on the side of caution. For those of you who pre-purchased tickets, we’re not yet sure of the venue’s cancellation policy, but hang on to your receipts and check our website or facebook page over the coming days for more information.

We’re very sad we can’t make it, but we’ll keep you posted on future DC tour dates. In the meantime, please be safe! There’ll be plenty of time for outdoor romps come monday.

Until next time,

– Darlingside

From The Sketch Bag: A Recap of the Gathering of The Vibes Festival

( Foreword by Dave: Those of you who have caught a live show recently will have perhaps noticed a strange creature living on Auyon’s left wrist. This creature is, in fact, a wrist brace, which Auyon has been wearing most of the time, but especially when playing violin/mandolin or trimming the occasional hedge.

Last summer, Auyon started to develop severe computer-and-peach-related carpal tunnel after he started developing mild computer-related carpal tunnel and then accidentally ran into a peach tree. While his musical skillz haven’t been affected much, his ability to use computers has been compromised to the point where he makes us do all of his typing work for him while he sits by and dictates.

To spare us from this weary routine, Auyon kindly offered to handwrite his blog posts from now on. We agreed, and here you can see he’s done a very nice little drawing for you all. )

The Ugly Truckling

Readers, be at ease; I have returned safely once again from the just-barely-escapable clutches of the harrowing Turnpike that is New Jersey’s. I am deeply touched, readers, by the numerous inquests I have received with regards to my personal health and safety — some of them impressively dogmatic as to my rights and ethical entitlements — but I regret to remind you that your compassion is only partially merited. The fact remains that it is always well within my power to decline participation in such injudicious jaunts, and yet I usually opt to humor the band if only to see how they hold up (humans being famously less rugged than vans).

The however-many-hours-each-way trip to DC was extremely pleasant, actually, thanks to comparatively moderate temperatures, dept. of transportation stimulus spending, and an especially friendly gas station attendant at mile marker 58. The guys were in fine form, too, both during the ride (it’s so cute when they take turns driving) and at their performance on Saturday afternoon at the 119th annual APA Convention outdoor lunch. I was parked in the shade on a sidewalkish road that cut through the park where the band was playing, and for the duration of the show I was treated to the most incredible view. Not of the stage, mind you — I would have tolerated a more generous distance from the noise — but of the trucks! Food trucks! Hundreds of them, it seemed, catering the event. My wheels, these were strange creatures, and of course the humans flocked to them with wide-eyed wonderment. Not so hard to pull off, maybe, when you’ve got a guy dressed like paddington in overalls selling perfectly spiced ethiopian shiro and lentil berbere.

So I just sat there not raising any eyebrows, not causing much of a stir, and certainly not selling any lollipopsicles, but very much enjoying the shenanigans while they lasted. And the drive back was rainy, and treacherous, and riddled with peril, dear readers, but it was no match for my handling and prowess. It’s just another twenty hours on the odometer, a few extra dings and scratches, and a story to tell.

(I gather from the band that the trip was a success, and that DC has upheld a hard-earned reputation for fantastic audiences, and that the guys look forward to returning for their show at the Rock N Roll hotel on the 27th. I suppose I look forward to it as well.)

A Summerish Mixtape

Typically, when someone makes a “summer mixtape,” it’s especially upbeat and…well, summery sounding.  But the thing is, sometimes it’s summer and you just need a little bleakness mixed in with the surf and sunburn.

So here’s what I’m listening to– summery or no, seasonal appropriateness be damned:

Listen at 8tracks.com

1. Cults– “Abducted“
2. The Zombies– “What More Can I Do“
3. Active Child– “Hanging On“
4. Panda Bear– “You Can Count On Me“
5. The Veils– “The Wishbone“
6. Real Estate– “It’s Real“
7. Wye Oak– “Civilian“
8. Burt Bacharach– “South American Getaway”

Phone dump: In the studio

My phone’s been holding these in for a little bit too long, and getting very fidgety as a result. Finally, it all spills out:

May 27 — Band and producer meet, and promptly get to work.

May 18 — I can’t recall exactly what made me take this photo. But doesn’t Sam look great!? You know, sometimes it just makes me happy to see Sam so happy. (Behind him: the tracking progress chart!)

May 20 — This is either the same tambourine that was used for tracking James Taylor’s “JT” album, or else somebody went to great lengths to trick us into drawing that conclusion.

May 27 — The 3 lb. gummi-worm, part I: The worm is presented.

May 27 — The 3 lb. gummi-worm, part II: The worm is engaged in single combat (er… hmm… I guess it was specifically double-teamed). Happy birthday, Don!

May 28 — A Darlingside ProTools session bears an unsettling resemblance to the most revered bad guys in video game history.

May 29 — Alcohol, spicy food, and dairy: the three dietary no-nos of vocal health, and therefore precisely what I crave as soon as I finish doing takes.

Finishing Touches

Here we find Don in the tracking room at The Studio in Portland, ME, putting the finishing touches on some track or another for our upcoming album. In the window’s reflection, we find Harris and Auyon, putting the finishing touches on drawings of DJ Danger Mouse.

We’ve had a great few months of writing and tracking for the album, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on. In the meantime, we’re excited to announce the bone fide return of our blog! Stay tuned…

The Studio Arrives

After a month of songwriting and some time off with our families and loved ones, the band is back at home, where a very large white truck just dropped off a recording studio (some assembly required). We are now officially hunkered down. Stay tuned…
