Darlingside w/ Caitlin Canty — Volcano

With Caitlin over working on scratch takes for her new release, we thought we’d test out the recording setup on a live take of one of our favorite covers (by Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice). Note Dave’s authentic Irish garb and Harris’ authentic hits-self-in-face at the one minute mark. See photos from the session here.

Three little gigs, a.k.a. This little giggy went to the market

The recent and timely arrival of 2010 means two things for Darlingside: the completion of our new home studio (and the resulting urge to use it), and the first real month of steady gigging. We kicked off the former by recording some drum takes and scratch tracks for a few different band songs (see the pictures here), and Caitlin Canty will be arriving today to begin working on her upcoming release. The gigging is also underway; we competed in an exciting battle of the bands here at home last weekend, followed by two consecutive gigs on the road this past thursday and friday.

The annual “Happy Valley Showdown” at the Elevens in Northampton is a revered battle of the bands that brings in indie acts from all over the area, takes place over many weeks, and boasts some serious prizes for victors and runners-up alike. Read More »

A Studio Catbird

We’re recording the first tracks of The Catbird’s Seat in our newly-completed studio.  I couldn’t be more excited about finally putting all of our hard work (and gear) to the test…
Check back often for more photos of the process!

A Diffuse Haiku

Don't you feel diffused just looking at it?

Home Turf

I don’t want to. Go away,” Harris muttered at me. He began puttering around with his belongings, feigning productivity.

Harris, I like the shirt. Don’t get me wrong. You look good in flannel, it’s just—”

I look great in flannel,” Harris corrected.

Great in flannel,” I agreed. “But you’ve worn it to every single gig we’ve played. We should switch it up. What if you wore a bowtie? Or this vest,” I suggested as I began to pull a vest out of his closet.

I look like a goddamn monkey when I wear a vest,” Harris said, grabbing the vest out of my hands. To eliminate all doubt, Harris slipped the vest on over his T-shirt and began to march around the room, clapping imaginary cymbals together. It soon turned into a full-blown jig set to imaginary music, replete with twirls and pirouettes. He eventually stopped to catch his breath. “A goddamn monkey,” he repeated as he flung the vest back into his closet, disgusted with himself.

It was Thursday, December 10th, two days before our big show at the Lilypad in Cambridge, MA, and we were picking outfits for the show. Dave called dibs on his ugly cardigan, a charming but unnecessary gesture. Sam was, as per usual, wearing a T-shirt that was two sizes too small. I was beaming with pride after sewing six buttons to the inside of my jeans in order to wear my dad’s old suspenders. Don said that he would “find something special,” and Harris was being difficult. We normally don’t dress each other until the night of a gig, but we were driving into Boston in waves, so emergency measures were necessary. After some further cajoling, we suited Harris up in a stylish, black V-neck with a neon green T-shirt underneath for a little extra zing. He looked fantastic.

48 hours later, we met at the Lilypad, a small listening room/art gallery at Inman Square in Cambridge. We were sharing the bill with the lovely Caitlin Canty, who had arrived a few minutes before us along with Greg Schulz of Socialist fame. It was the most anticipated gig of our young band’s career, as much of Williams moves to Boston following graduation. We impressed ourselves by starting out almost on time, and things went up from there. Caitlin opened up the show. She sounded spectacular, and we had the pleasure of accompanying her on several of her tunes. She’s thinking about keeping us, which is rather exciting. After a few crossover pieces, Darlingside took the stage. We kicked our set off with a cover of Damien Rice’s Volcano before playing our brand new originals for the crowd. Everything about the night felt good. Our jokes were well-received, familiar faces filled the room and Sam had a brand new drumset that he had just purchased in Connecticut. The best part of the night for me, though, was our second-to-last song, the recently-recorded Surround. As soon as Harris and I began the intro, the crowd went nuts. We need to get more tracks recorded ASAP.

Firmly,

Auyon

Technical Shmifficulties

Hey all,

We received some reports that the .zip file download of “Surround” wasn’t working properly on PC’s. Media geeks that we are, we confess that we only have macs in the Darlingside household, so we didn’t realize there was an issue. It should be working now, but since we can’t actually test it, please let us know if the problem persists. You can also download the mp3 directly (right click and choose “Save As” or a similar option). Thanks for downloading!

At a Crossroads

Friday night, we played an excellent Battle of the Bands competition at Crossroads Rt. 20 in Palmer, MA, not too near and not too far from the dear ole Mass Pike.  We arrived at 9 and had a solid couple of hours to enjoy the other bands, first ‘Miles Orgasmic,’ second ‘Rattlebone.’  We attempted country-style dancing (to varying degrees of success)  and played some Buck Hunter Pro (wherein Dave enjoyed a commanding victory over Harris) while we steeled our nerves for the big set.  This turned out to be our first chance to really let loose and play as loud as we wanted.  Sam took the lead and brought us to a heavier place than we’d been during our basement rehearsals.  We had low expectations as far as our success in the competition (judged by applause) because we don’t have m(any) fans in the area. After the first two bands put on such a great, high-energy show, we were just happy to be playing music to folks who wanted to listen.  At the end of the night, we were incredibly moved by the crowd response we received which helped us to narrowly edge out the competition.  Sadly, we can’t make it to the finals next weekend (we’d known that back when we booked the first round), but fortunately, that means Rattlebone will be taking our place, keeping the “biker blues” running hot.

We stayed at the bar until after nearly everyone had left, striking down our gear and talking music with the other bands and Crossroads employees. Every last person we spoke with was extremely friendly and enthusiastic about having us back, and we even enjoyed some free drinks on the house. After sampling their draught selection and observing another deadly round of Buck Hunter (deadly for Harris’ ego?), we headed back home in great spirits.

We didn’t get any pictures of the actual performance, but Sam managed to take one picture of Don “reliving the set” on the empty stage after the show (see below).  We’re pumped to play another gig at Crossroads in early 2010!

Tonight, we’ll be playing a gig with Caitlin Canty and Greg Schultz at the Black Moon in Belchertown, hoping to carry over a lot of positive vibes from Friday night…

TheSixtyOne.com

This music website is sweet.  It’s like a role-playing game (you can complete quests and achieve levels), but also very indie at the same time.  We’re hoping to ascend in the ranks with the new Surround demo…help us out, and possibly become a level 32 Undead Warlock in the process.
